Vicodin, Zappos, Flowers — Oh My!!
I had knee surgery this week. I recommend it. Not the surgery necessarily, the week recovering.
I went in for the operation at 7:30 Monday morning and in less time than it takes to get highlights, I was fixed, stitched and on my way home. I’d been a bit nervous about the anesthetic, aka the Michael Jackson cocktail but when done properly (shock) in a hospital (shock) with highly-trained anesthesiologists, it’s spectacular. I have no recollection of the surgery, or the surgeon showing me the LIVE images of the tear in my meniscus. I can’t even remember how I got down to the recovery room or how I got the bruise on my right calf. I just remember the nurse waving my mom over to my curtained cubicle and the look of relief on her face, as if she hadn't breathed the entire time. We took a taxi home because that’s what you do after surgery in NYC.
I spent the next 72 hours in bed sleeping almost the entire time. I’m pretty sure that had more to do with my general state of exhaustion than the pain medication. I did no house work even though I was home. I paid no bills even though the stack was calling my name. And after the girls went happily off to school, I climbed back into bed to start my day which consisted of going back to sleep. After that I busied myself emailing friends, napping, surfing the internet for vacation destinations and dozing. I watched two romantic comedies with no interruptions. And though my knee hurt, I was home for an entire week to greet my girls when they came home from school which was, without question, the best part of all.
On Thursday, with my strength returning, I made a new friend. Suffice it to say, Zappos and I have connected in a really BIG way. I’ll confess I’m probably the last mom on earth to buy children’s shoes online. But my dilemma has always been that buying online is easy. Going to the post office and returning things that don’t fit is time I simply do not have. Still, my daughter had spent almost the entire winter with snow boots and snow pants two sizes too small and thanks to Punxsutawney Phil and his powers of projection, I knew I had time to make things right.
