Michele Bachmann: Afraid of the Soviet Union? Seriously?

After celebrating Elvis' birthday on the anniversary of his death you would think that Michele Bachmann would attempt to get her facts straight. But no, she persists in making statements that cause other people raise their eyebrows a bit, not for their extreme nature, but because they are factually wrong.

The gaffe prone Bachmann tends to laugh these incidents off and she pays little price for making incorrect statements.

Who can forget when she lauded a town for being the home of Hollywood icon and hero John Wayne when it actually was the adult residence of John Wayne Gacy, convicted serial killer.

This mistake should resonate more with people who really care about who occupies the White House. As of now, people are just mildly amused about this as well, but perhaps it should be a little more disconcerting even to Republican voters.

Bachmann made the following statement on Jay Sekulow's radio show, "What people recognize is that there's a fear that the United States is in an unstoppable decline. They see the rise of China, the rise of India, the rise of the Soviet Union and our loss militarily going forward."

The Soviet Union has not been in existence for nearly two decades. One would think that a potential leader of the free world, and one who could potentially shape our foreign policy in the future would realize this fact.

At one time the Soviet Union was our biggest adversary and their power did strike fear in many citizens, but today it is no more. It was broken up into 15 separate Republics.

In this day and age many people fear a great many things. Perhaps we should be a little fearful of Presidential candidates who cannot distinguish a failed nation such as the Soviet Union with the reality of a present day Russia and its sister countries.

On the bright side, Ms. Bachmann never claimed to be able to see the Soviet Union...err...Russia from her home in Minnesota.
