It can be said that people are exactly what they display themselves to be in their social media realms. People say what it is they feel, what they are doing, what they are eating and when they are going somewhere. One’s identity can be said through status updates and tweets as well as the pictures that are uploaded.

The majority of social media users are those who have Facebook accounts. It is through those accounts that many people show to the world through cyberspace what their habits are.

So what are the more serious habits of its users? Could they be drinking??

According to a study in the Oct 3 issue of Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, examinations of the public Facebook profiles of more than 300 undergraduates at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Washington were conducted via questionnaire; the results were interesting to say the least.

The profiles were divided into three different categories: Profiles with no alcohol references, those with alcohol references but made no mention of getting drunk, and finally profiles with colorful phrases pertaining to “getting wasted.”

The last group scored the highest in the questionnaire for being potential problem drinkers.

Researchers believe that by using Facebook, these problems can be solved with intervention by parents, family, or friends.

Half of all college student deaths are related to alcohol abuse.

This would be a golden opportunity for parents to become more active in the lives of their kids. Hopefully, parents of younger children or new parents reading this article can be part of the solution from the very start.
