The Best SAHM I Know Isn't a Mother
I am not going to fuel the old Mommy Wars debate. It's old news that I
couldn't stomach from the get-go. It is not up to me to judge how
others make choices for their families and for themselves. I am pro
choice, whether it's your body, your kid's school, your religion, or
your vote. I believe in choosing what works for you. While I have my
opinions, some stronger than the coffee you'll get at a Moroccan
restaurant, I realize that no has christened me Boss to dictate what
are simply rants of opining, not truth telling.
I'm a Mom. I'm often at war, but not with other moms. Mostly I battle with myself, my kids, and on off days, with my husband.
I'm also a work-outside-the-home-mom. Well, technically, my office is right upstairs, but my clients and their business take me outside the home most of the time.
And I'm a stay-at-home-mom. You see, I work part-time. In my own business. I eat three meals a day with my sons (except for the first grader, who'd be embarrassed if I showed up in the cafeteria everyday), I drop them off and pick them up from school everyday, I cook, I play, I build LEGO masterpieces, I carpool, I bake (sometimes not even from a box), I play dress up, I wipe bottoms and noses, I help with homework, I read, I snuggle. The balance I have struck is fine tuned and perfect. For my family. I get to keep my brain engaged in work that I love. I get to volunteer at my sons' schools. I get to chaperone field trips. I get to sneak away on business trips. The tasks and tribulations of my day are no different from any mom's, whether she works in an office or not. All in all I consider myself a pretty good, and lucky, mom.
But the greatest stay-at-home-mom I know is a dad.
Upon first sight you might be startled by his Schwarzenegger build, hairy upper lip, and tangled gold chains. But after he cracked a grin followed by his signature chuckle you'd see that he's all teddy bear wrapped up in a football player's body. And did I mention that he indeed was an honest-to-goodness football player back in the day? He taught kindergarten and special education kids before he had children of his own. He has the perfect disposition to be with kids all day. Granted, his size makes him a perfect jungle gym and bounce house all in one. Unlike me, he's always been drawn to children, getting down on his knees to communicate eye to eye with them and joking around, laughing at their silly antics.
