My Movie Moment
When I was young I wanted to be a television broadcaster. I dreamed of investigative reporting and replaying the day's events to families at the end of the day.
Today I was at a local television station meeting with the newscasters who emcee one of the fundraising events I manage. While we were speaking with the male of the male/female team, someone came up and whispered something about his partner being out due to her child’s appendicitis.
Open to my movie dream sequence….
“Whatever will we do without a female co-anchor?” the male anchor quietly says. “We’re set to go on in five minutes.”
“I could give it a try.” I say, shrugging and smoothing out my hair.
“You?” He looks at my overgrown hair, very little make up, and ill-fitting clothes.
“There’s no time! Put her in the chair,” a producer yells as he runs through.
Music Montage (to Moving On Up by the M People) My hair is fixed, my jacket pressed, make-up applied, and a layer of Vaseline goes on the teeth.
They show me my seat and 5…4…3…2…1... We’re rolling. I kill it.
I go home and cuddle my son, enjoy dinner with my husband and stay up researching breaking news for the next day. The next morning I meet with my station-supplied personal trainer and shop for new jackets and lip stick shades.

I know this is not the life of a newscaster, they have demanding hours, exhausting expectations, and I’m not really sure about the station-supplied personal trainer. This is not intended to be a literal account of their life.
That’s not the point. My point is, every day we have movie moments. Moments we want to break into song and dance. Opportunities for our life to change dramatically just like it does in the movies. A chance we’ll never have again. Even though life isn’t what it is in the movies, it’s refreshing and exciting to know that every day we have an opportunity to believe it might be. Until then I’m happy in my fundraising role, maybe my next movie moment will be the real one.
