SXSW 2010: The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights
Emmett Malloy's documentary feature Under Great White Northern Lights follows The White Stripes on a Canadian tour, culminating with a tenth anniversary show in Nova Scotia. Compared by some critics to classic concert films like Gimmie Shelter and Don't Look Back, Malloy has pretty high marks to live up to. From the looks of the trailer, though, this definitely looks like a winner. The film mixes live concert footage with behind-the-scenes footage and candid interviews, all of which are gorgeously photographed in color and black and white.
Considering the band's relationship with the media—they lied for ages about the real relationship between band members Jack and Meg White, claiming for years they were brother and sister—it will be interesting to whether or not this actually offers a glimpse at the "real" White Stripes.
The film played some international festivals last year, but SXSW will be its United States premiere.
