SXSW Interactive may have come and gone, but the Film and Music portions of the festival are still going strong. If you're in Austin tonight, you can check out the North American premiere of Matthew Porterfield's film Putty Hill.

While it's not going to lift any spirits with its subject matter—the film centers around a community's reactions to the death of a heroin addict in an abandoned house—it's always exciting to discover yet another refreshingly heartfelt and lyrical American indie amidst a similarly great festival lineup.

If anything, SXSW Film this year should reaffirm our faith in the strength of American independent filmmakers to produce powerful, affecting work well outside the studio system. When people complain that "independent" filmmaking doesn't mean anything anymore and it's all been swallowed up by Hollywood subsidiaries, I tell them they just aren't looking hard enough.
