Mustafa Davis Shares Compelling Stories Using Film
In The Hands of God from Mustafa Davis on Vimeo.
Bay Area director / producer Mustafa Davis shares a heart-wrenching story of a father and son who are left to fend for themselves in Malawi, a small African nation. Malawi is known to be one of the least developed and most densely populated countries in the world.
Davis' film, which was released early this morning, has very little dialogue as he wanted the images and the expressions of the Kamoto family to speak to the audience.
I asked Davis to share with us some insight on this powerful film.
Technorati: What was your objective for creating this film?
Davis: My objective was to create awareness to the real plight of the people of Malawi by telling a compelling story, or rather having them tell us a compelling story. I wanted to also prove that films can be told in pure images without the need of excessive dialogue or narration. To bring the art form back to its original form of moving pictures.
Technorati: What do you hope to accomplish?
Davis: To allow the viewer to "experience" the film rather than just watch it. To understand what they need to from the film rather than dictating to them how they should see it.
Technorati: What drives you?
Davis: Telling stories that need to be told that unless I pointed my camera at them might otherwise go untold. Having the ability, through the art of filmmaking, to give significance to the insignificant.
Speaking more about his new release, Davis says that "The film has a very clear story, but each individual can interpret in his or her own way."
