Anton Corbijn's thriller The American opens in theaters tomorrow. While it's likely to fly under the radar of most moviegoers, I've been anticipating this film since first hearing about it. Corbijn, a widely renowned Dutch photographer and music video director, receieved a great deal of international acclaim for Control, a biopic about Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis released in 2007.

The American is Corbijn's attempt at creating an atmospheric, European-style thriller. George Clooney stars as a ruthless assassin hiding out in Italy, charged with one final mission from a mysterious contact. Filled with striking compositions and long takes, the film seems influenced more by the espionage classics of the 1970s than the rapid-fire flicks of today. Clooney's presence will hopefully lend the film enough star power to give this one a good run at the box office. It may not be a big smash right away, but if the advance buzz is right on, this may have the legs to become the sleeper hit of the year.
