3DTV Overcoming Barriers, Sales Expected to Double in 2011

Although some forecasts for 3DTV in recent months have been pessimistic, recent projections suggest 3DTV is going to make waves, like it or not.
Barriers to adoption of these high-tech TVs have ranged from price to content to funny-looking 3D glasses, but all signs seem to indicate that the technology is well worth it. According to a Futuresource Consulting report, sales for 3DTVs are expected to jump next year in a big way, leaping from 4 million sold this year to as many as 8 million sold worldwide in 2011.
A quick news search clearly shows the difficulty in forecasting 3DTV sales, as forecasts have been increased, cut, and modified throughout the entirety of 2010. As we near the end of the year, those upper forecasts appear to be hitting the mark. The Futuresource report even stated that "year one adoption of 3DTV is running at a far quicker rate in most territories than it did for high-definition."
So could 3DTV make a bigger, faster splash than HD? As the barriers come down and forecasts go up, it certainly looks like a possibility. The same Futuresource report found that prices of some 3DTVs have fallen by as much as 40%. Meanwhile content for 3DTV continues to grow and consumers seem more and more willing to don the glasses once they see the experience 3DTV offers.
