TechNet Magazine Bytes the Dust
Microsoft TechNet magazine, a staple of server rooms and support desks everywhere, says goodbye with its November 2009 issue. Microsoft announced on Tuesday, November 10, that the monthly lifeline for System Administrators and that guy who comes and fixes your computer would change to a web only format, assuring readers that "…the magazine will continue to thrive on the Web."

Now, magazines can no more thrive on the Web than a Web site could thrive as a once-monthly printed publication. It's simply not the same beast. What makes a great magazine, such as Byte, which was a Bible for computer geeks for over two decades, does not often translate to a Web site. Hence the current obscurity (and identity crisis) of Byte.
Microsoft, however, is reassuring, stating that the mission of the magazine/Web site would remain "laser-focused on helping IT professionals use Microsoft technology." And likely to buy it, too.
