iPad-Only Sites Coming From WSJ and NPR
According to reports on Mediamemo, both The Wall Street Journal and National Public Radio will be developing iPad-specific web sites. The sites will auto-detect iPad users and serve a customized version of all content, optimized for the Apple device.
Customized how? Well, no Flash to start with. Apple's refusal to allow Flash on the iPad means that companies and services that use flash to deliver content and/or ads will have to find new ways to code their sites.
In NPR's case, HTML 5 will take care of the content side, but the lack of flash ads has meant they've had to get a site sponsor for launch.
The Wall Street Journal is recoding the front page to completely eliminate Flash as well, though as users dig deeper into the site, they'll likely run into sections with the "missing plugin" indication we all know and love.
While NPB and the WSJ have the resources to develop customized sites for iPad, this whole Apple vs. Adobe issue may cause real problems for other developers.
