Star Trek, Starfleet Goes Mobile
Smartphones are changing our world. They are cool and slick, devices which seem to be an offspring of the communicator devices in Star Trek. In fact, today's smartphones are even better than those original communicators, surfing the web, running apps, and streaming video. Here is a peek into the world of Gene Roddenberry, smartphone style:
Captain Kirk -
A gut feeling decision maker, Captain Kirk owns a new phone every two months. At first it was the iPhone, then the iPhone 3GS. But with the current pace of Android releases, Kirk is constantly reading through the blogosphere and trying to find the perfect device. Recently Kirk used his influence through Starfleet to get a his hands on a developer version of the Dell Streak 7. Yes it's big, but that just means it can be seen shouting, "Hey! Look who's cutting edge!"
Spock -
Originally, Spock owned a Blackberry 8700. However, it was only logical to switch to an iPhone 3GS when Apple's innovation proved to be revolutionizing the smartphone market. The Android platform appeals to him, but Spock has already invested too much in apps for his handset. He wants an iPhone 4, but is waiting for it to be released in white on Verizon.
Captain Piccard -
Always prudent, Captain Piccard is a diehard Blackberry fan. At present he is using a Blackberry Storm 9530. Satisfied with the phone's business sensibilities and connection to the Enterprises Exchange Server, Captain Piccard uses his phone to get his job done. However, the Captain is not all work and no play, having purchased an iPad. He is so enamored with these tablet devices that he decided to give them away as gifts to all his officers on the bridge.
Data -
Owns a Nexus One, rooted and running Cyanogenmod nightlies. Data is currently working on adopting the Android platform into a sub routine for his own positronic brain. However, even though Data lacks the need to sleep and can work at incredible speed, he has been stymied by Google's even faster update cycle.
