After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, nations all over the world have tightened security and increased efforts to monitor its public places to assure public safety. A huge component of this increased security is the use of high definition cameras to monitor the goings-on in and around the streets of the world’s major cities.

The use of HD cameras is helping law enforcement get clear images of those who are breaking the law or who may be a terrorist threat. Despite the on-going debate over the perceived infringement on personal results by using these cameras, they’re proving to be valuable in fighting even everyday crime.

While the public isn’t told how well the HD cameras are doing to thwart terrorist attacks, we are seeing its everyday law enforcement use and how it can benefit local police.

Just this week, Vancouver police talked about the use of the cameras to find and prosecute a clan of rioters who looted a retail store of electronics and other high-priced items. Because the images have such deep and clear resolution, security images are reviewed and then used to bring these hooligans to justice.

Not only are the cameras being used in retail security, but now the home market for HD security cameras is also starting to take root. Whether you pick them up at Costco or the local Best Buy, homeowners and private citizens are also using the cameras to increase security at home.

Today, for less than $1,000, homeowners can create a monitoring system that will allow them to monitor the interior exterior of their home. These clear HD images are allowing the common homeowner to monitor what’s happening around their property 24 hours a day. The market isn’t growing fast but the lower cost means more and more people are able to use HD technology to protect themselves and their family.

The lingering privacy question remains. Whether they’re HD cameras or not, increasingly private citizens are spending more and more time on camera. Still, the proper use of this HD technology to monitor or public places has proven to be helpful in fighting crime. There has been no example, thus far, of inappropriate use of these cameras thus violating privacy.

High definition technology continues to change the lifestyle of the modern man or woman. Whether it’s entertainment, mobile phones or high-tech security, HD is quickly weaving its way into our daily lifestyle.

Remember to smile.
