Well in advance of the holiday shopping season, the CVS drugstore chain has started stocking its value-priced $99 netbook.

Since electronics are some of the hottest-selling holiday gifts, CVS’ offering should put pressure on other brick-and-mortar retailers to sell cut-rate netbooks.

The 2-pound Sylvania netbook, with a 7-inch display and 128 MB of internal memory, runs on the Windows CE 6.0 operating system. It comes with YouTube already installed like an app.

An informal poll by InformationWeek found that the devices “flew off” CVS shelves over Labor Day weekend. The retailer advertised the netbook in Sunday newspaper inserts.

A TechPinger review lamented the netbook’s reliance on Windows CE.

“This version of the system serves as the basis for mobile systems from Microsoft, but it in itself is unfriendly to the end user, not to mention the scarcity of programs presented,” TechPinger said.

While Examiner.com reviewer Barbara Garrett complained about disappointing video-viewing capabilities and questionable life of the lithium battery, she praised the netbook’s ease of use for some online purposes.

“If you are wanting something to use to leisurely check your Facebook account, this is a great choice. It is much easier than using your cell phone, and the typing is easier, of course,” Garrett wrote.

“It is nice to access websites, too, but a large webpage is a little slow to load. You should keep this in mind.”
