A Connecticut company is opening a new chapter in new media: high-definition animated children’s story apps for iPhone, iTouch, iPad, Android and other mobile platforms.

Through its Ruckus Mobile Media unit, Ruckus Media Group will create a library of digital media by combining touch-screen technology with intellectual property from children’s authors, children’s illustrators and celebrities.

Co-founders of Ruckus Media Group are CEO Rick Richter, who was president of Simon & Schuster Children’s Publishing from 1996 to 2008, and Chief Operating Officer Jim Young, a former executive at NBC and Viacom.

“With more than 26 apps to be available by the end of the year and 75 under contract, Ruckus Media is poised to become, almost overnight, among the world’s largest resources for children’s media for mobile platforms,” Richter said.

Among the authors and illustrators on the Ruckus roster are Jon Scieszka, Rosemary Wells, Sandra Boynton, Andrew Clements, Patricia MacLachlan, Alan Katz, David Carter, Kevin Lewis, Mike Austin and Caitlin Friedman.

The Ruckus list of apps also includes the Rabbit Ears Library of classic children’s tales told by celebrities like Meryl Streep, Glenn Close, Robin Williams and Denzel Washington.

The company’s first apps—for iPhone and iTouch—will be available for $3.99 each beginning Sept. 28.

“The explosive apps market is ripe for Ruckus to leverage smartphone and tablet computer technology’s capabilities to improve on and enrich a child’s experience on mobile devices,” Young said.
