Plaxo, the online address book, has rolled out a free iPhone app. Reviewer James Hicks wrote of the new app: “The iApp looks to be quite intuitive and straightforward to navigate. For a 1.0 release, I’m surprisingly pleased.” Plaxo appTwitter user Andrew Kelly wasn’t so psyched, though: “Plaxo just came out with an iPhone app. Too bad it’s worthless.”

Another Twitter user, Chris Demeyere, wrote: “Plaxo may have just initiated something that is going to be big. An iPhone app that backs up your contacts.” Plaxo said features of version 1.0 of the app include:

  • Full two-way sync between your Plaxo address book and your iPhone or iPod Touch (free to all Plaxo members)
  • Single sign-on Plaxo, Google or Facebook
  • Ability to directly call or email your Plaxo contacts
  • Complete access to Plaxo contact groups and favorites.

Previously, Plaxo’s iPhone app was available for free from iTunes, but users had to be paid subscribers to Plaxo’s premium service to enjoy all the app’s bells and whistles.

“With Plaxo for iPhone, you can take your Plaxo address book wherever you go, backup your contacts safely online, and automatically sync over the air,” Hong Kwon, product manager for Plaxo’s iPhone team, wrote in an email to Plaxo members.

Plaxo says it secures address books for more than 40 million users. Mountain View, Calif.-based Plaxo Inc. is a subsidiary of Comcast Interactive Media. To download the new Plaxo app, click here.
