Verizon released a press release today stating the company had field tested FiOS speeds around 1 gigabit-per-second to one of their customers who are subscribed to the gigabit passive optical network (GPON).

Verizon also stated the GPON platform will support downstream speeds up to 2.4 gigabits-per-second and 1.2 gigabit-per-second upstream speeds.

The company also went on to say that the "throughput speeds were measured at 925 Mbps (megabits per second) to a local server and more than 800 Mbps to the regional test speed servers. The customer's existing FiOS service was left in place, and showed no degradation in the voice, data or video services during this trial."

This is extremely good news as Verizon’s FiOS network will also support backhaul for the new Verizon Wireless network technologies being rolled out late 2010.

Verizon has been known to spend billions of dollars per year on its network and the rewards are just getting ready to be reaped. The new generation of FiOS technology as well as wireless technology is extremely exciting if you’re a Verizon customer both on the landline side and wireless side. What are your takes on this new FiOS technology?
