Using iPad for a Visual Media Portfolio
Ok, I’ll say it right up front: I have a real problem with Apple’s recent hubris.
But damn, the iPad is the perfect device to show your media portfolio. Android OS tablets are coming up fast, so you may want to hold off on a tablet purchase, but right now the benefits of an iPad as a sales presentation tool are:
- Instant on and snappy performance (for that elevator pitch)
- The basic wow factor & bragging rights (“gee is that one of those new iPads? Lemme see!”)
- A stunning display
- The perfect “tablet” form factor (Apple got that right for sure)
Here are four options to create your portfolio:
#1 Use iPhoto (free)
It's not a great option to brand your company, but it’s free with the device and you can create albums, transitions and other useful features you may already use.
#2 Use Apple's Keynote ($79 for computer and $9.99 for iPad) this is my recommendation
With Keynote you can create a custom slide show and design your own look and feel. You can add images as well as video. Let me say it again: as well as video.
In the current iPad version of Keynote, not all Keynote '09 features are available. So I recommend installing Keynote on your computer, building your portfolio, then load that portfolio via the iTunes file transfer process. The downside is you will need to buy the iPad Keynote app as well as iWork for your computer.
Bonus - many people don’t realize you can export an HTML version out of Keynote, upload folders and serve up your presentations from any web browser (including Android OS devices of course).
