Is Intel Going On A Shopping Spree?
Over the last month or so, the world's largest semiconductor company, Intel, has been buying up all kinds of businesses. Today, for example, they announced the purchase of the wireless division of Germany's Infineon Technologies AG for $1.4 billion.
This is the second major purchase in the last two weeks, with the first being the colossal purchase of antivirus vendor McAfee, Inc. for an incredible $7.68 billion dollars.
This most recent purchase gives Intel a very good foothold in the mobile marketplace with access to a large number of the wireless chip maker's customers. Infineon is ranked number 3 worldwide in the wireless chip manufacturing market, so it will be quite interesting to see how this purchase benefits Intel and how they will put it to use.
In response to a number of questions as to why Intel would purchase McAfee, they issued a statement citing the following reasons:
- Acquisition enables a combination of security software and hardware from one company to ultimately better protect consumers, corporations and governments as billions of devices - and the server and cloud networks that manage them - go online.
- Intel elevates focus on security on par with energy-efficient performance and connectivity. The acquisition augments Intel’s mobile wireless strategy, helping to better assure customer and consumer security concerns as these billions of devices connect.
- Intel has made a number of software-related acquisitions of leaders in their respective industries that also rely on great silicon, including Wind River, Havok and now McAfee.
