Don't Pin That Fan Boy Label On Me
I could have lived a long and healthy life without ever having heard the term "fan boy." But I landed here as Technology Channel Editor and suddenly that phrase was all around me. There are fan boys of every type (and you don't have to be male or young to be a fan boy). However, the hard core, do-or-die opponents seem to be the Android fan boys and their Apple adversaries.

I unknowingly stepped in the muck when I wrote a Soapbox Musing about how I was going to turn in my trusty Android phone, which had served me well for two years, for a Verizon iPhone. I played it light, giving the Android lots of props along the way, but said that in the end I just couldn't get over the fact that it was an iPhone I had wanted all along—and now I was about to get the object of my desire. Over here at Technorati we don't get too many negative or surly comments to our stories, so I was a little taken aback when two obvious Android fan boys blasted me, one calling me an "idrone" and a "lemming," and the other bragging about how the Android was coming out with dual processors, so how about that? Huh? (iPhone 5 is supposed to come out with chip that runs dual processors. Chortle.)
I was flummoxed. Did I not say how much I liked my Android phone and how well it served me? Maybe I should have put something in the article about the fact that I cut my online editing teeth doing Droid Does Apps right here at Technorati. We wrote about nothing but Android apps in the spring. It was a challenging and fun assignment and I never once thought the Android was a bad phone. But this was back when I thought people could be sensible about the hardware they carry around. When I didn't realize that you had to commit to either Android or Apple.
