Blog Focus on Windows 7's Release
Blog Focus is Technorati's daily roundup of the top stories as told by the bloggers of the world. Each day a handful of posts, no matter how popular or nascent, will be selected by editors to portray a general unscientific reaction to discussion points around the 'Net.
Windows 7 arrives today with Microsoft's aspirations of continued world domination resting firmly on its broad yet supple shoulders, not to mention the final hope to guide every hardware manufacturer from here to Taiwan from the desperate straits we lovingly call "fiscal year 2009".
That's assuming, of course, that the operating system isn't going the way of the dodo, the passenger pigeon, and scripted network drama: everyone will think you're feather-brained if they hear you talking about seeing one in ten years. Everyone knows cloud computing is the future, right? Right?
So no pressure, Microsoft. It's not like the whole world is watching or anything. Except for the blogosphere, of course. And here's what they have to say:
• CrunchGear — Matt Burns wants to know: so are you in or are you out? Upgrading the OS? Upgrading the hardware?
• The Windows Blog — Can you upgrade? Mark Relph from Microsoft helps you find out.
• Digital Daily — John Paczkowski notes that Windows 7 (in all its flavors) is already the biggest-selling pre-order ever in the UK. Like, in all recorded time. So you'll pretty much be the kid at school still wearing Hush Puppies when everyone else is sporting Chuck Taylors if you haven't already made your purchase.
• Gizmodo — And how can you afford not to make your own purchase when Best Buy is selling an HP desktop (with monitor), laptop, and netbook for $1200? What are you, an anti-American Communist?
• Engadget — Still, if you're not up for buying a family's worth of electronics, perhaps your budget can hold an Eee PC netbook sporting Windows 7 Starter. If not, you might have to settle for buying Windows 7 and carrying it around so no one thinks you're a dweezoid.
