App Review: Kindle
Many apps have proven useful for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, but few have remained as incredibly useful as the Kindle app. I've read many round-ups of "best of" and "coolest" apps, and they all gloss over the Kindle app, probably because it's "just" a book reader. I happen to think think it's a little marvel. And for free, it's a must-have.
If you have a regular-sized Kindle from Amazon.com, the app synchronizes with what you are reading on the e-reader. Enter you Amazon sign-in info and password and your Kindle library will instantly be imported into your device. Then the magic happens. If you happen to be reading a book currently on Kindle, the Kindle app will go to the book and the page where you left off. It's like the machine has been looking over your shoulder.
For all the people who complain that the screen is too small to ever be practical should consider the last time they were caught in a line at the DMV or were, uh, stuck in the bathroom. Having something, anything to read in moments like these is one the little reliefs that life offers—and suddenly that screen doesn't seem so small anymore. Actually, the later models of the iPhone and iPod Touch (with Retinal Display) are so clear and the ink-on-paper look is so crisp, that there is no eyestrain whatsoever. Plus, if the type is too small, you just use your fingers to make the letters larger.
Pages turn with a swipe of the finger and the back light allows you to read in the dark. It's not as pleasant to read as the actual Kindle, which is a total delight, but I found nothing to complain about.
