This Wednesday at the IFA Electronics show, Samsung showed off their new Galaxy Tab, a tablet computer similar to Apple's iPad. Samsung makes a further bold statement: it's at least as good as the iPad. Whether or not that actually means anything is yet to be seen.

This new device comes standard with front and back mounted cameras and weight in a little lighter than its Apple counterpart.

"In terms of the weight, you may not think it's a significant factor. But we think, through consumer research, that weight is very critical to enjoy the user experience," W.P. Wong, head of Samsung Mobile's product planning team said.

The product is expected to start shipping to Europe by October this year and the US by the end of 2010.

In terms of battery life, the Galaxy should last at least 7 hours running on a single charge, and runs on the Android operating system 2.2 (code name Froyo), and will be upgradeable to Android 3.0, Wong says.

The tablet has a large 7-inch, 1024x600-pixel LCD display, making it larger than the average smartphone but still small enough to be hand held for comfort.

Samsung stresses that this tablet is stronger, more reliable and has better display and sound capabilities than the iPad - and indeed, this is what it will need to outweigh its rival in the long run, as consumer spending judges the winner.
