Review: DROID 2 by Motorola
Verizon Wireless will launch the DROID 2 by Motorola on August 12th as its second generation device in the DROID lineup of products. The DROID 2 will ship with Android 2.2 Froyo, which is Flash 10.1 enabled and provides a near perfect computer-like web experience.
Verizon has been a leader in the recent charge of Android OS smartphone devices, which has given Google and its Android OS significant market share; with the release of the DROID 2 by Motorola, it should continue to increase.
I have had the opportunity to test this device over the past couple of days and a few big improvements stand out to me. The web experience on the DROID 2 is the best I have ever had on a smartphone, period.
Verizon states the DROID 2 operates 40% faster than its predecessor, and I found it to be true. The Flash capability along with the 1 GHz OMAP processor and onboard 512 MB ram make loading web pages a breeze. I wanted to really test out the Flash and speed of the web browser, so I loaded up a few web-based Flash games and I literally had my mouth open in awe because of how well the phone performed. Even simple tasks like performing Google searches are faster and easier when using the custom Google search widget from the home screen.
The DROID 2 features a 5 MP camera with flash as well as video capture modes. First of all, the camera snaps pictures almost instantly; a big downside to the original DROID was that it seemed to take forever once the picture button was pressed. If I had to put a time on it, I would say the picture snaps a full 2 – 3 seconds faster than the original DROID. Not only that, but Motorola also enhanced the video capture by adding slow and fast motion capture. I don’t know where the practicality comes into play on those video features, but I can tell you it was fun to play with.
