Google Maps users running Android 1.6 or better (sorry, all you suckers stuck at 1.5), can immediately download an update to Google Maps that provides direct access to Places.

Google Maps 4.4 gives you a dedicated icon that launches Places and helps you quickly look up nearby places, then get more information about where you want to go by hitting a Place Page, in the same way that function works on your computer.

After downloading Google Maps 4.4, the Places icon will appear in the launcher. Press it to find nearby restaurants, stores, entertainment, etc. They've set you up with some pre-set categories, but you can add your own custom groups as well.

And just as on the computer version, clicking on 'more information' will give you photos, reviews, etc.

Google Maps 4.4 is available for download immediately.
