Fallout 3 Pip-Boy Now Available With Android (Military Only)
If you haven't played Fallout 3, and you're a gamer, well, your missing something. But if you're in the military, at least you'll be able to play with the primary gadget from the game, the Pip-Boy 3000.
OK, maybe it's not exactly the same, but it's certainly close enough that any avid gamers that dropped their Mountain Dew and joined the military will get a kick out of it. Built by the monolithic military supplier General Dynamics, the Itronix GD300 is worn on the wrist or the chest, has a high-end real-time GPS system built in, and connects to tactical radios. And it runs Android, so it "easily accomodates current and emerging applications for warfighters at all command levels." Sexy.
The unit runs on a 600MHz ARM Cortex A8 with 256MB or ram, 8GB of flash, and an 800 x 480 3.5-inch screen that's both "glove friendly" and "sunlight readable." Which is a good thing, as anything short of at least those two specs would be idiocy.
No word on pricing, but if history is any indicator, for this rugged device with the power of a low-to-mid-end smartphone, taxpayers will probably be seeing a bill in the neighborhood of a kabillion dollars give or take a few bucks.
