Droid 2 Official Launch Thursday; Pre-Sale Wednesday
Verizon has finally made official what's been rumored for some time. The new Motorola Droid 2 will be available on August 12th, with pre-orders being accepted at Verizon's site starting August 11th (not much "pre" in that pre-sale, huh?)

For those of you that don't eat and sleep Android handset news, the Droid 2 is pretty slick indeed. It ships with Froyo, the much desired latest version of Adroid (that'd be 2.2 to those codename-challenged), a hearty 8GB of onboard memory and an additional 8GB via preinstalled microSD card.
It also supports Verizon's new mobile hotspot option (which turns your phone into a wireless 3G hotspot), Flash 10.1 (take that, Apple), speech-to-text input, and Swype software keyboard, which is pre-installed.
Add a slide-out keyboard, a 3.7-inch display and a 5MP capera and you're pretty hooked up. They're even releasing a limited edition R2-D2 version of the thing in early September.
Pricing is set at $199 with a two-year contract, after a $100 rebate in the form of a debit card, and you can pre-order the thing at the Verizon Wireless site starting Wednesday, and hit the geeky-fest "Star Wars Celebration V" in Orlando this weekend if you want to gawk at the limited edition phone.
