We've already reported on the staggering year-over growth of Android handset sales, but the numbers just keep continuing to climb.

According to a recent report by Digitimes, smartphone sales will top 280 million units in 2010, a 57% increase from 2009, but the big winner in the segment will be handsets that are running Android, which are expected to account for more than 55 million of them.

When you consider that in 2009 Android had only 5% of the smartphone market, then captured 13.8% of the market in the first half of 2010, finishing the year with those numbers is a remarkable feat, and a jump of 561% from 2009.

This also means that Google is that much closer to flipping the switch that will allow them to over the minds of all Android users, rendering them foot soldiers in Google's army and allowing them to move their universe-domination schedule up by a few months.
