First it was the Mini 5, then it was the Streak. Now it appears to be almost ready for shipping.

Featuring a widescreen 5-inch display, integrated social media features, and Google Maps with text-to-voice and turn-by-turn instructions, the Dell Streak is being described by the manufacturer as a "go-anywhere entertainment, social connection and navigation device." That, at least, certainly saves them the flak of people saying it's too big to be a phone - because it is. Both. As in: both too big to be a phone, and yet it's also a phone.

Dell representative Tavis Buttler underscored this fact in an interview with the BBC in May, saying "this is a data device first and a voice device second."

Perhaps that's why they don't even mention the fact that it's a 3G phone in the bullet list of features on the product page. In fact, this whole silly phone thing isn't even brought up until the very end of the promotional material.

Instead, Dell pitches the media and other features, including the size of the screen, the 5MP front and back cameras, the 1GHz Snapdrogon chip, WiFi, Bluetooth, microSD card support, GPS, and social media components.

Whether this is to try and carve a new niche in the industry for "bigger than a phone but smaller than a tablet" devices (they're supposedly going to follow the Streak with 7 and 10 inch models), or they're trying to cover the fact that the phone part of the equation doesn't rock, we'll see once the thing ships.

Which, by the way, Dell says will be by the end of the this month (it's July for those of you who are disoriented), and they've put a sign up page on their site to allow you to be among the first to get your grubby little mitts your very own Streak.

Give them your email address and/or phone number (for text messages) and when they're ready they'll let you in on a 24-hour pre-sale purchase window, upgrade you to free 2-day air shipping, and let you cop a Bluetooth headset for an extra 99 cents. Pricing for the Streak itself, though, has yet to be set.
