Android-Powered nookColor Number One (For BN)
It looks like the promise held in the Android-platformed nook eReader that was released last year may finally be realized - by the nookColor.
The new eReader that Barnes & Noble started shipping only last month has become the single biggest seller in the company's 40 year history of doing business. It was also, obviously, the best selling holiday gift in 2010 even though it was released only eight weeks prior to the big day.
Now, I do understand that their their product line thus far has for the most part been books, and millions of different titles, but it's still an incredibly impressive showing for a piece of technology on the market for only 2 months.
The nookColor, in addition to being, well, color, does run apps, though it does not have access to the Android Market, and BN has said that thus far there are no plans to allow such access (of course, there are people out there rooting the device to gain access, but clearly that's not supported by the company).
Perhaps more fascinating than the success of the colorNook itself is the announcement that eBooks have actually surpassed the sales figures of physical books on the Barnes & Noble website, BN.com. Not only that, but they report over one million books were purchased and downloaded from the site on Christmas day alone. Incredible.
