Early in 2010, it looks like we might actually get to see Google’s Android 2.1 operating system arrive on the HTC Hero and other Android-based devices.

In the UK, the HTC Hero, available as the T-Mobile G2 Touch, is currently limited to Firmware version 1.5 leaving it some way behind in the Android stakes (the 1.6 platform is not yet available in the UK with T-Mobile).

According to figures produced by Android.com for week commencing 14th December, more than 71% of active devices are running Firmware versions of Android 1.6 or higher.

With rumors abound that Google recently released 2.1 to manufacturers it looks like providers in the UK may skip version 1.6 altogether, and perhaps even 2.0 (codename Eclair) as it would make sense to move direct to version 2.1.

The Hero does benefit from its 5-megapixel camera, the capacitive touch screen, and a pretty good battery life, but some of the tempting new features of Android 2.0 include multiple accounts (hopefully UK providers will allow Exchange accounts), some support for HTML 5, Bluetooth 2.1 support (hopefully it might allow Bluetooth keyboards!) together with new profiles of Object Push and Phone Book Access. The virtual keyboard is getting a makeover, too, together with some new effects to take advantage of the on-board camera.
