Amazon's Summer Release of Kindle for Android Eagerly Awaited - Page 2
The Kindle for Android will be able to search more than 540,000 books, including 96 of the 110 New York Times bestsellers. Plus new releases will be available. Hundreds of books are $9.99 or less at the Kindle store. (But hold onto your boots. Some really popular ones can cost as much as $14.99. It's all part of the price wars that are going on with digital books.) Sample chapters are provided at no charge for those who have a hard time making up their mind. This Kindle app does not offer newspapers, magazines or blogs.
You can access all the previously purchased Kindle books stored on Amazon's servers for no charge.
Whether Kindle for Android will look as good on the screen as it did on iPod Touch is difficult to tell and largely has to do with the quality of individual makes of cell phones.
"Kindle for Android is the perfect companion application for Kindle and Kindle DX owners, and is also a great way for customers to enjoy…books in the Kindle Store even if they don't yet have a Kindle," said Jay Marine, director of Amazon Kindle. "We think customers are going to love the convenience and simplicity of having instant access to a massive selection of books from Amazon on their Droid, Nexus, Incredible and many more Android devices."
Since it works on all Androids, even those running a 1.6 operating system on the by-now decrepit G1 phone from T-Mobile like mine will be able to enjoy books on a cell phone. Just think, for a while anyway, you don't have to have an iPad to be cool. Just download Kindle for Android, and soon you'll be reading bestsellers at your favorite restaurant in no more space than it takes to hold a napkin.
