Smartphones have created a massive footprint in the evolution of mobile technology. By making mobile computing widespread, they've also caused an increase in the demand that additional technologies make themselves available to the consumer via the smartphone.

The smartphone's largest markets are among young people and those in major urban centers, both groups for whom vehicle ownership is less likely. Effectively, the smartphone killed the vehicle tracking device, still barely out of its infancy.

The smartphone churned through a more rapid adaptation to a demanding tech-savvy consumer base who still required the GPS service. The small step to making turn-by-turn directions available for drivers is quickly elbowing GPS-only devices off the market.
