SharePoint is a a web application platform developed by Microsoft and first launched in 2001. It is available in over 30 languages. While regularly used for web content management systems, the SharePoint platform actually has much broader capabilities and can be used to provide viable solutions in a range of areas.

SharePoint's design allows for wide spectrum operations, such as the management of intranet portals, collaboration spaces, extranets, document and file management, websites, social tools, enterprise search, business intelligence, system integration, process integration and core infrastructure for third-party solutions, while also being a platform for custom applications.

Microsoft offers the SharePoint Foundation platform free of charge, but will charge for premium editions with special features. SharePoint is also provided in Microsoft's cloud computing, as part of the company's Office 365 platform. Some third-party vendors may also sell the platform as a cloud solution.

One of the many applications of SharePoint includes an intranet portal, as a means of centralizing access to information and various applications across a corporate network. This is a commonly used tool which helps companies manage data with greater ease. Some of the benefits associated with intranets are increased employee engagement and reduced new staff on-boarding costs.

Enterprise content management with SharePoint enables companies to store and track different virtual documents, or images or paper documents. It can also help organize different versions of the same document. SharePoint can thus help reduce email flow within an organization, as well as optimize document tracking.

SharePoint
has an extranet feature which allows password-protected access to a network for people outside the organization. Companies will usually use extranet as a means of integrating third-parties into different business processes.

SharePoint
also has a "Publish" feature which enables web masters to manage large public websites with ease. Moreover, SharePoints' user friendly interface is familiar to regular users of Microsoft Office.

Its web configuration and customization abilities allow users to arrange content, pages and sites; create, copy and delete lists, pages, sites and libraries; in addition to managing user permissions and managing definitions and properties of pages and websites. In simpler terms, SharePoint provides all the necessary tools to manipulate content and pages, as well as add new functionality to websites.
