operating systems

Tag details

An operating system is software that acts as an interface between the hardware of an electronic device and other software that is compatible to run on it.

The main responsibility of an OS (Operating System) is the management of processes that are running on the system as well as the allocation and distribution of hardware resources.

Most people think of popular operating systems like Microsoft Windows 7, Linux (although Linux is in technical terms not an OS but a Kernel) or Apple Mac OSX when they are asked to name some that they know. But operating systems are actually present in nearly every electronic device, albeit often in a simpler form.

Google Android and Symbian are two examples of operating systems that are used in cell phones and other mobile gadgets. It becomes common that modern household devices like coffee machines or refrigerators make use of operating systems as well.

You'll find bloggers talking about operating systems at sites like Ghacks Technology News and Windows 8 News.
