Shozo Kawasaki first founded what would become the company that bears his name in 1878. Since then,Kawasaki Heavy Industries has become an international company with a diverse range of products and services in many industries, including trains and railroads, aerospace, electricity generation, shipbuilding, motorcycles and four-wheelers (ATV).

Kawasak began selling its own complete motorcycles in 1961, beginning with the B8 125cc two-stroke. The company quickly expanded, and brought a number of notable models to the market, including the 1966 650W1 and the 1973 Z1. The first “Ninja” sportbike, part of the most famous Kawasaki model range, was shown to the motorcycle press for the first time at Laguna Seca in 1983 to favorable reviews.

Since then, Kawasaki motorcycles, especially sportbikes, have become a common sight on the race track and on the road. Currently, the ZX-6R is the company's supersport entry, the ZX-10R is the flagship 1000 cc sportbike, and the ZX-14R is a large-displacement sportbike often used in drag racing. There are also a number of cruisers, such as the Vulcan, and many popular off-road motorcycles like the KLX and KX models.
