The iphone 5 is the upcoming model in Apple's iPhone series, which, according to the Japanese website Macotakara, is expected to be launched sometime during the fall of 2012, possibly in October or November. With the recent confirmation of the iPad 3 launch event, other sources have suggested that the iPhone 5 will actually be announced earlier, in June.

The iPhone series is undoubtedly the most successful Apple product, having sold over 80 million units. Apple is currently the third largest mobile phone manufacturer in the world, after Nokia and Samsung. Development of the iPhone dates back to 2005, when then CEO Steven Jobs became interested in the potential of touchscreens. He wanted to integrate smart features into a mobile phone, and consequently established a collaboration with telecommunications corporation AT&T.

The first iPhone was unveiled to the public on January 9, 2007 at a trade-show in San Francisco. By the time the iPhone went on sale, queues of hundreds of customers had gathered outside retail stores throughout the US.

The fifth and latest installment of the series, the iPhone 4S, was launched in October 2011 and managed to sell over 1 million units within just 24 hours of its release. The device is quite similar to its predecessor, but also hosts a series of new features and software upgrades. It uses the Apple 5 processor with the Imagination Technologies PowerVR SGX graphics processing unit, which is an improvement of the GPU used with the iPhone 4. The iPhone 4S also uses a dual-core processor model that bears many similarities to the system integrated in the iPad 2.

While the back of the original iPhone was made of aluminum, the newer versions feature an all plastic back which helps to boost the GSM signal. The iPhone 4S also features a bumper case made of rubber and plastic that protects the edges of the phone. While the bumper does not cover the front or the back of the phone, it does elevate the device slightly when placed on a flat surface.
