iPhone 4 represents the commercial name of one of Apple's smartphone line of products. As with other iPhone devices, it is a touchscreen smartphone that runs a proprietary operating system called iOS. It is the 4th generation model, following iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. The phone also includes media player and web browsing capabilities and boasts video calling features.

iPhone 4 breaks away from the classic iPhone design, shifting focus from a more curvy appearance to a more sharp edged, flat, industrial look. While the front is still tributary to its predecessor, with a single button wide screen, the front and back surfaces are made out of flat sheets of chemically strengthened mate glass. The flat stainless steel band that wraps around the phone contributes to the minimalistic look of this model.

The glass surfaces, while less prone to wear and tear than plastic ones, also means that any scratch is more visible and extra handling care is advised. For those concerned with this aspect, the cases can be shielded by bumpers. For a price, Apple also offers replacement cases. Moreover, due to a similarity in design, iPhone 4s cases can also be replaced with older iPhone 4 cases. These models are identical from a layout point of view, with only barely noticeable differences in antenna design.

The display has a 3.5 inch screen which features an LED backlit TFT LCD with a resolution of 960x640 pixels and a contrast ratio of 800:1 and has been marketed by Apple as "Retina display", as the manufacturer claims that it offers the maximum level of detail perceivable by the human eye at the distance of 12 inches, which is the distance the phone is estimated to be used at.

IPhone 4 comes with an Apple A4 chip also used with iPad, gyroscopic sensor, accelerometer and two cameras, as well as an additional VGA camera that faces forward, mainly for ease of use during video calls. The backside camera offers 5 megapixels with 5x digital zoom. Noise cancellation capabilities have also been added through the inclusion of a second microphone.

The phone uses a non replaceable battery and offers 7 hours of talk time on 3G, 10h video playback and 300 hours of standby time. The size of the internal storage is either 16 GB or 32 GB, depending on the selected version. The operating system can be upgraded to the newest iOS 5 launched together with the new iPhone 4S, although iPhone 4 will be unable to use some of the newest features that Apple's operating system includes.
