footwear

Footwear consists of garments that are worn on the feet. Footwear is used primarily for protection against the environment, but is also used to make a fashion statement. Early man, and those who live in impoverished areas of the world do not necessarily use footwear of any kind. Some religious environments such as temples disallow footwear to be worn at all.

In general, although not as often with flip flops or sandals, material is worn between the footwear and the foot, for further protection, warmth and/or fashion.


Footwear materials include leather, plastic, rubber, textiles, wood, jute, metal and others. Several brands have come to market which appeal to different people, activities and budget. Whether one is hand weaving sandals from sagebrush bark or buying brand name shoes online, footwear has existed for a very long time. How long is uncertain, but there is evidence to believe that the first footwear dates back to 500,000 B.C.
