environmental protection agency
For many people, the Environmental Protection Agency conjures up images of thugs who come beat you with a bag of doorknobs if you don't recycle your plastic. While the agency does have the power to fine and sanction anyone who is not complying with strict environmental standards, the goal of the agency has always been and always will be to simply make America cleaner and safer.
When President Richard Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency (with Congress's backing) on December 2, 1970, it is doubtful he had any idea how big and powerful the agency would come in just a few short decades. The agency now has approximately 18,000 full-time employees who conduct environmental assessment, research, and education.
As can be expected, this research has created a lot of "Technological Jiggery Pokery." Everything from wind and wave turbines, solar power, wood pellets, hybrid cars, and recycling centers have all come into being because of the direction and vision of the Environmental Protection Agency. The agency also leverages this research to work with industries and all levels of government in a wide variety of voluntary pollution prevention programs and energy conservation efforts.
