basketball
Basketball is aptly defined as "a team sport in which two teams of five active players each try to score points against one another by propelling a ball through a 10 feet high hoop (the goal) under organized rules."
The game of basketball was invented in 1891 by Dr. James Naismith in Springfield, Massachusetts. Dr. Naismith's primary goal was to develop a sport which his students could play during the winter months in the New England area. He developed the indoor game initially with just 13 rules. Although the game has developed over the last century, the game's primary purpose and objective has remained the same.
The game of basketball is played by millions of people worldwide, both by amateurs and professionals. In the United States, the NBA has its history traced back to the 1940s, just after World War II. Almost as popular, college basketball, sponsored by the NCAA, traditionally has a 65-team tournament to determine a season champion at its highest level. This time of the year, commonly known as "March Madness," lasts over three weeks for both the men's and women's tournaments. In Europe, the top organization is the Euroleague, which began play in the late 1950s.
