Anonymous refers to an individual's state of anonymity, which is the condition of being without a name, or providing no personally identifiable information.


Anonymous is also a term used to refer to a newly surfaced internet concept that describes online and offline community members who function as part of an anarchic, global brain. The Anonymous group has no known leader, but represents the convergent actions of different individuals whose identities are unknown.


Anonymous actions are often coordinated toward a mutually-agreed upon goal. The group's name has become synonymous with different kinds of political and social protests, primarily promoted via acts of hacktivism. Some of their more well known protest actions were carried out against SOPA, the take down of file sharing websites and organizations opposing WikiLeaks.

The symbol of the Anonymous group is the Guy Fawkes mask, which is often employed in protests movements to represent the idea of strangers uniting under a common goal.
