Revis to Sit Out Entire Season?
The Darrelle Revis holdout saga appears to be spiraling out of control.
ESPNews is reporting that New York Jets' owner Woody Johnson has told ESPN's investigative news program E:60 that his "gut feeling" has told him that the star cornerback "won't play for the Jets' this season."
Revis established himself last season as one of the best shutdown cornerbacks in the league, keeping big name receivers such as Steve Smith, Randy Moss, Roddy White, Terrell Owens (twice), and Chad Ochocinco (twice). He is seeking to become the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL, the title that is currently held by Nhamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders.
Revis had 47 tackles and six interceptions last season for the Jets, and was one of the main reasons why New York only gave up eight touchdown passes the whole season. Both the Jets and Revis agree that a new contract is needed, but neither side has come up with a long or short-term deal that will be appeasing to both sides. He became a hold out on August 1st, and if Revis does not report to camp by Tuesday, the 2010 season will not count as an accrued season for the three year cornerback.
When asked Monday if a deal would be done by Week 1, Johnson simply said: "The answer is no", and Jets GM Mike Tannebaum has stated that both sides "had a pretty good sense of where things stood" after the meeting.
