NFL Owners Want 18 Game Season
The NFL owners are currently trying to work out all the details of going to an 18 week schedule from 16 games. The owners clearly want this, and will make it happen. The money is too good for it not to happen.
The question is how?
Seems simple enough, make two of the preseason games into games that count. Problem is most of the starters don't play a lot in the preseason. The preseason is supposed to be for giving new players a chance to learn the plays, and impress the coaches with their play.
The players have a genuine concern about an increase in injuries that might go along with two extra games.
The owners have supposedly suggested an extra bye week, and an increase to the roster size. An increase to the roster size tells you the owners know their will be more injuries, so the players concerns are valid.
The owners want two more regular season games, as do the tv networks, and the fans.
It is going to happen, the only questions are when and what changes will come with it.
The players need to prepare themselves not only physically, but monetarily, the chance for injury is going to increase. I don't see any way around more guaranteed contracts, I just hope these contracts are available to the fringe players, the guys who just barely make the roster.
The stars will make their money, and hopefully will avoid injury. The sad part of the NFL is when a guy who is playing for the minimum on an unguaranteed contract has a career ending injury. I just hope the player's union takes care of these players.
An 18 game season is coming, we all want it, maybe with the exception of the players. Let's hope all the players get taken care of the way they deserve, and with a new season about to begin, let's hope we get plenty of great games and no season, or worse, career ending injuries.
