Media Goes Mad Over Randy Moss’ Post Game Outburst
I'm not sure what was more outrageous – Randy Moss’s post game rant Sunday about not being well liked – or the reaction of certain self righteous Boston media members to Moss’s eyebrow raising monologue.
You’ve probably heard the story by now. Following the Patriots' impressive opening day victory over a pretty good Cincinnati Bengals team, Moss held court with the media and instead of celebrating his team’s win, he went on…and on…and on…about, among other things, the Pats not offering him a new contract, the media not liking him…and that he feels he’s unappreciated.
The media reaction was predictable…especially among a certain few who live for this sort of stuff. Immediately following the game we heard how Moss made himself the story and totally overshadowed a terrific opening day performance by his team – in a game that featured, among other things, Wes Welker’s amazing return from ACL surgery, Tom Brady reminding the world of how good he really is and a realization that the Pats finally have some speed on the defensive side of the ball.
All entirely predictable from a select few who approach this stuff like sharks tasting blood. Moss, no doubt about it, is a legendary malcontent. And the Felgers, Shaughnessy’s etc. were just waiting for that side of him to show itself.
I’m not sure about anyone else, but to this Patriot fan, Moss' rant didn’t take anything away from the fact that the Pats beat a playoff caliber team and for much of the game looked great doing it.
But here’s the rub - and this is what I think the media totally misses. Moss is playing for his last big contract. He’s a free agent after this season, which is unfortunate for him because NFL owners are very likely going to lock out the players following the Super Bowl and probably throw away the keys until these guys start missing pay checks next fall. Not the ideal time to be hitting free agency by any means.
Further, he’s sat back and watched the Patriots reward Vince Wilfork and Tom Brady with mega deals. Moss is also a smart guy and realizes that he’s the one who makes their entire offense go because of his ability to stretch the field — which in turn opens up all the underneath stuff that is the Pats' bread and butter. One of the reasons Wes Welker is Wes Welker is because of Moss.
