With Red Sox Reeling, Beckett Returns to Win
The Red Sox are seven games out of first place and the injury list looks longer than the roster. Unknown names are patrolling parts of the field that are unrecognizable by fans and thoughts of "it's over" are creeping into Red Sox Nation.
However, a glimpse of what the team could be appeared last night as ace Josh Beckett return from a prolonged injury to lead the Sox to a 2-1 win over the Seattle Mariners.
The Sox grabbed their second win in a row courtesy of a Bill Hall homer — the second in two nights — which broke a 1-1 tie.
The story of the night, however, was Beckett, who went 5 2/3 innings, threw 98 pitches and had just one run on five hits and three walks.
“That was so encouraging,’’ manager Terry Francona told reporters after the game. “Ball came out of his hand good. Threw his breaking ball really well, and that’s what he had really wanted to spend the majority of his time on in his bullpen session with John [Farrell].’’
The showing was a positive sign for the Sox, who at this point, are looking for anything and everything to help push them towards a playoff spot.
“That’s kind of how I have to go at it,’’ Beckett said. “Obviously I can’t control what happened earlier, between the injury and the ineffectiveness. But I’ve got to go out there and do my job.’’
What do you think? Is this the start of a surge for the Red Sox or should Red Sox Nation start lining up on the Tobin Bridge for the "it's over" annual jump?
