MLB Hands Out Suspensions to Red and Cards After Brawl
Fighting has no place in professional sports unless you're talking about boxing, UFC or hockey. In all other professional sports, nothing good ever comes of it — not to mention that the fighting is more like a school yard shoving match (though one would argue the NBA has some pretty good bouts).
This week, the Reds and the Cardinals had a good dust up — so good that it resulted in Major League Baseball handing down some suspensions.
Reds pitcher Johnny Cueto has been suspended for seven games and both managers were suspended for two games, according to ESPN. Additionally, the league fined Cueto, Cardinals manager Tony La Russa and Reds manager Dusty Baker.
Four other players were fined but not suspended — Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter and catcher Yadier Molina and Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips and relief pitcher Russ Springer.
The drama all began when a fight broke out in the first inning of Tuesday's game in Cincinnati.
"We regret the incident happened," Reds spokesman Rob Butcher said in a statement, as reported by ESPN. "After a thorough investigation of the incident, MLB has handled the discipline accordingly for both clubs."
Cardinals spokeswoman Melody Yount told ESPN that general manager John Mozeliak was traveling Thursday and unavailable for comment, though he would be available to the media on Friday.
