View From the Center: A.L. West Breakdown
Welcome to "View From the Center," where our resident pseudo-expert slash Cincinnati Reds fan Jeff Gentil takes a regular rundown of the topics of interest within baseball's divisional landscape. Last week, awards. This week, we break down the division races.
Texas Rangers: The team's president sues the team. MLB is running the team and approving trades. Mark Cuban has been approved to bid on purchasing the cash-strapped franchise. All hell is breaking loose in Texas. Yet, the team continues to put distance between themselves and the rest of the division. Sounds about right.
Los Angeles Angels: As the playoff chances look bleaker by the day, the Angels are exploring any and all possible trades to give the offense some more punch. Unfortunately, they've come up empty so far and they continue to lag in the standings. If they don't turn it around and soon, their three-year playoffs streak will come to an end.
Oakland A's: Surprisingly the A's have stayed away from the rumor mill so far this "trade season". Obviously they still have time, but aside from Ben Sheets, they really don't have that many big trade chips...and Sheets really isn't a hot commodity with his 4-9 record and 4.53 ERA.
Seattle Mariners: Basically, the Mariners (and their fans) are counting down the games until they can mercifully go their separate ways. Since the Cliff Lee trade, the Mariners haven't been mentioned by anyone outside Seattle, and it doesn't look like that will change anytime soon unless they decide to move David Aardsma. And even that won't be big news.
