The Plight of Boston Sports Fans
Since 2001, Boston has had the pleasure of enjoying a slew of championship parades.
The Patriots won three Superbowls. The Red Sox killed eight decades of drama by coming back 0-3 to beat the Yankees and beating the Cardinals and Rockies to win World Series Championships in 2004 and 2005, respectively. And oh yea, don't forget about the Celtics winning the NBA championship in 2008.
It's now 2010 and the guaranteed parade celebrations are all done. The Celtics came close last season to winning. The Red Sox are a perennial playoff team, but are getting older. The Patriots are also a perennial playoff team, but are in a division that's the most competitive and talented in the league. And, let's not forget about the Bruins that handed over a 3-0 lead to the Flyers (which still stings).
Long story short, Bostonian's sense of "we are title town" is gone. We are just another city of "good" sports teams that bring our hopes up, only to crush them like they used to do pre-2001.
What most Bostonian's aren't telling you is that we kind of like it. We enjoy being the underdogs. We like getting close to the top of the mountain but not actually getting there. We're born complainers and are pretty good at it.
It took us a while to adjust to being "title town" and because it turned us into a snooty, privileged city, it turned the rest of the sporting world against us.
The other thing we aren't telling you is that we like the hating as well. Jealously is a flattering thing.
And oh, by the way, I was born and bred in the Greater Boston area so I'm one of those snooty, privileged Bostonian's that does expect to win it all every year. Yea, every year.
